I honestly hate using a laptop. I use this one out of necessity, and circumstance, rather than by choice. What do I hate about using a laptop?
1. Between the power supply, my USB hub, my external hard drive, and, most of all, my speakers, not only do I not need to move the laptop around much, but it's actually undesirable for it to be unplugged from all those items. Why have a portable computer, when you don't need it to be portable?
2. I miss the large monitor that my old computer had; this laptop screen involves far too much scrolling. Even worse, this particular laptop's screen is extra wide, which I feel is unnecessary (I had no part in the selection process), and only serves to emphasize the fact that it's not very tall. Argh! Frustrating.
3. The touch pad. Oh, the touch pad. Dear god. I just can't deal with that thing. I've been using this laptop for something like three months now, and I still can't manage to avoid accidentally clicking on things by resting my hand for too long, or highlighting things when I have absolutely no intention of highlighting them, or de-selecting a number of items I have selected, or, in the case of my previous version of Windows, randomly zooming out of whatever webpage I was looking at, thus making everything smaller, and not knowing how to fix it. I'll definitely hook up my mouse when I clear some desk space for it. Which, actually, brings me to my next point:
4. The really awkward placement of things on this particular laptop. Is the audio plug right at the front of the laptop, as in, on the side that faces me? Yes. Do I kind of wish it were off to the side, or at the back? Yes I do. I've got speakers hooked up to this thing, and I'm forced to run the cord for those to the front of the laptop. The speaker cord, on its way to the plug at the front of the laptop, runs in front of the disc tray, which is at the side of the laptop. Do I kind of wish that were placed elsewhere too? Yes! Yes I fucking do. Perhaps I have things on my desk that interfere with the tray's ability to open, or perhaps I've got a cord from some speakers running on that side of the laptop. This is what happens when you don't pick out your own laptop; frustration happens.
5. The speakers that come built in to this laptop are awful. Obviously I am no longer forced to rely on them, which is great, but, really, why bother in the first place? When a song sounds almost exactly like the ringtone version of it that you have on your phone, that's just not right.
